Train assembly

In Create, a train is a free-form build: you build whatever you like on bogeys in front of a Train Station, and the station turns it into a vehicle. This guide goes through the steps in order: bogeys, glue, fuel and Train Controls, with the numbers taken from the mod's code.

Bogeys on the track

Bogeys are placed on the track with Train Casing, the train blocks are glued, charcoal goes into a chest, then two Train Controls are added.

Switch the station to assembly mode, then right-click a track with Train Casing: a bogey appears. Each carriage rests on one or two bogeys. The first bogey must be inside the area shown in front of the station.

Small or large bogey

Small and large bogeys under the future train

Clicking the same track again cycles the design: small bogey, large bogey with drive rods, and the variants added by some addons. The choice is mostly visual, but a large bogey takes more room under the carriage. Wheels spin with the distance travelled.

Glue everything

Build the train on the bogeys, then join the blocks with Super Glue: click two corners to glue the whole box. A block that is not glued stays behind when the train leaves. Glue each carriage separately from its neighbours.

Fuel

Charcoal stored in a chest of the train

A train runs without fuel, at 28 blocks per second at most. With fuel in an on-board chest or barrel it goes up to 40, and 20 in turns. Every tick of travel burns one tick of fuel: a piece of charcoal lasts 80 seconds.

Not in item vaults

Item vault of the train, contents never consumed

Fuel stored in an Item Vault is never burnt. Vaults are therefore for freight: your coal shipment arrives untouched, and a portable interface can unload it at the station.

Controls are mandatory

Train Controls placed on the cab

Without Train Controls on board, the station refuses to assemble. Their arrow sets the front of the train. Put a seat in front of them: that is where the conductor sits, a player, a mob or a Blaze Burner.

Driving both ways

Second Train Controls facing backwards

A second set of controls facing backwards lets the train leave a station in reverse without turning around. Essential for a shuttle on a single track with a terminus at each end.

The steps at a glance

1. Straight tracks in front of the station. 2. Assembly mode. 3. Bogeys with Train Casing. 4. The train's blocks. 5. Super Glue. 6. Controls and a seat. 7. Fuel if you want speed. 8. Confirm in the station. The train must not exceed 128 blocks or 20 bogeys.

Common mistakes

A bogey outside the area, unglued blocks, missing controls or two carriages glued together make the assembly fail: the station points out the faulty carriage. A train breaks no block of the world: it drives through. The real danger is another train on the same track.

Several carriages

A long train is made of several carriages, each glued separately on its own bogeys. The station links them with a coupling. A carriage can rest on a single bogey, but two bogeys make it follow the track better in turns. The controls only need to be in one carriage.

Carrying cargo

Chests, barrels, item vaults and Fluid Tanks mounted on the train keep their contents while it runs. At the station, Portable Storage Interfaces placed along the platform load and unload the train without any player.

Checking before confirming

Walk around the train before confirming: glue everywhere, controls facing the right way, seat in place, fuel stored. It saves a trip back to the station.
