Extendo Grip

The Extendo Grip is a claw on the end of a long folding arm. Held in one hand, it stretches your reach to place, break and hit: 3 extra blocks, and even 5 with one grip in each hand. The perfect tool to build a wall, a bridge or a factory without scaffolding.

The item

The Extendo Grip seen from three quarters

A handle, a precision mechanism, two stages of wooden scissor arms that unfold, and a brass hand on the end. The recipe goes through a Mechanical Crafter: a brass ingot at the top, the precision mechanism, two rows of three sticks, then the brass hand at the bottom.

One hand or two

The Extendo Grip from the side

A single grip adds 3 blocks to your block interaction range. Holding one in each hand raises the bonus to 5 rather than 6: the two do not stack, but the second one still buys two more blocks. Creatures are targeted with the same longer reach: you can hit or use a mob further away than usual.

The parts

The Brass Hand and the Precision Mechanism

The Brass Hand is crafted from brass and andesite alloy; it is the same part as on the Deployer. The Precision Mechanism needs sequenced assembly: that is the real cost of the grip.

Wear and air

Every block placed or broken and every hit costs 1 durability out of 200. With a full Backtank on your back, the grip draws 1 air instead: a 900-air tank covers 900 actions, and the item's bar shows the air left. On a big build, that is the combo to use.

On a building site

For a tall wall, stay on the roof and place blocks 7 or 8 blocks down. For a bridge, walk out with no temporary railing. In a factory, it reaches a machine stuck behind a row of belts without taking it all apart. It pairs very well with the Wrench in the other hand: you turn blocks from afar.

In combat

The Extendo Grip gives +2 knockback to your hits: a mob knocked far away does not come back at once. It does not change the damage. With both hands busy, there is no room for a shield: keep it for building rather than adventuring.

On our server

The longer reach follows protected areas like everything else. The server config can make the grip unbreakable (maxExtendoGripActions set to 0); by default it wears out.

Common mistakes

The longer reach does not go through walls: you still need to see the block you aim at. Without a filled tank, the grip wears out fast on a big build; Unbreaking or Mending makes it last longer. And two grips give 5 blocks, not 6: the second one adds two more blocks, nothing beyond that.

Extendo Grip or scaffolding?

For a tower or a wall, the Extendo Grip saves you from putting scaffolding up and taking it down. For a very tall build, Create's scaffolding still helps: it never falls and you can climb it. Used together, they cover almost every case.

With the Backtank and the cannon

The Extendo Grip, the Potato Cannon and the Diving Helmet all draw from the same Backtank. On a long trip they share its 900 air: the grip only takes one per action, but a cannon that fires a lot can empty the tank before you get home. A Capacity enchantment on the tank gives you some headroom.
