Millstone
The Millstone is Create's simplest grinding machine: a block that grinds whatever you throw on top. It turns wheat into flour, flowers into dyes, bones into bone meal, gravel into flint and stone into sand. It is slower and less rewarding than Crushing Wheels, but it takes a single block and almost no power, which makes it the perfect starter machine.

A machine that grinds what you give it

The Millstone handles milling recipes: one input, one or more outputs, sometimes with a bonus chance. Wheat gives one Wheat Flour, plus a 25% chance of two more and a 25% chance of a seed. Flowers give two dyes, sugar cane two sugar, a bone three bone meal, wool one string, gravel one flint and sandstone some sand.
It handles one item at a time: a whole stack put inside is ground one item after another.
Powering it from the side or from below

The Millstone takes rotation in two ways: a shaft from below, or a cogwheel placed against one of its sides, since its rim meshes like a small cogwheel. That is what the animation shows: rotation comes in through a neighbouring wheel, and the top stays free for input.
It uses 4 SU per RPM, so a single small water wheel can run it at 64 RPM.
Putting items in from the top

Items go in through the top. By hand, just throw them onto the millstone and it swallows the item that lands. For automation, a funnel, a hopper or a chute above it keeps it fed. Grinding time depends on speed: each recipe has a duration (150 for wheat, 50 for a flower, 250 for gravel), and the millstone removes RPM ÷ 16 from it every tick. At 32 RPM one wheat takes about 3.75 s; at 256 RPM, half a second.
Collecting the result
The result stays inside, in nine output slots. Right-clicking the millstone with an empty hand gives you everything it holds. If the output is empty, the same click hands back the item waiting to be ground, which is handy to undo a mistake.
Automating the output

For a real production line, empty the millstone with a funnel on its side, a hopper underneath, or a Mechanical Arm. In the animation, the products come out onto a Mechanical Belt that carries them away. A classic early chain: harvested wheat, a millstone, flour, then dough with some water, and finally bread in a furnace.
Millstone or Crushing Wheels?
The millstone is small, cheap to run and fine for flour and dyes. For ores, go for Crushing Wheels: they work faster, take items in bulk and offer crushing recipes the millstone does not have, such as crushed ores, which also give Experience Nuggets and, once washed, by-products (redstone for iron). Both machines share the milling recipes: anything a millstone can grind, crushing wheels can too.
Common mistakes
- The millstone will not take the item: it has no milling recipe, or the output slots are full.
- It does not turn: a shaft against the side does not connect; only cogwheels work on the sides, and a shaft has to come from below.
- It is very slow: at 16 RPM or less, the millstone only removes one point per tick. Speed it up.
