Weighted Ejector

The Weighted Ejector is an item catapult: placed at the end of a line, it throws whatever it receives towards a target chosen in advance, up to 32 blocks away, above or below. It replaces dozens of belt segments to cross a ravine, climb a floor or link two factory islands. It can also wait for an exact amount before firing, and even launch a player.

Picking the target before placing

A target is picked before placing; the lines show the allowed area along the ejector's axis, and an off-axis target is refused.

Like the Mechanical Arm, the ejector is set up before it is placed. Holding it, right-click the block that should receive the items: it is remembered. Then place the ejector where you want it and it turns towards its target on its own. With no target picked, it simply throws onto the block right in front of it.

A target along the axis

Green lines from the ejector: the area of possible targets along its axis

The target must lie straight in line with the ejector, on one of the four horizontal axes, never directly above or below. It can be higher or lower, up to 32 blocks each way. A target shifted sideways, even by a single block, is refused: move the ejector, not the target.

The launch

A copper block is thrown onto a casing, then onto a Depot; set to 10, the ejector waits for a full stack coming from a belt.

The ejector needs rotation: 2 SU per RPM. Put an item on it and the plate flips up at once; the item follows a trajectory computed to land right on the target. The plate then winds back down slowly, faster when the rotation is fast and the target close: it takes 1.6 s at 32 RPM for a target 4 blocks away.

What receives the item

On arrival, the item goes straight into whatever can take it: Depot, Mechanical Belt, another ejector, Funnel, Chute… On an ordinary block it drops to the ground at the aimed spot. If it hits an obstacle on the way, it stops there and falls: keep the path clear.

Waiting for a full stack

A belt delivering copper blocks one by one onto the ejector

The value panel sets a stack size: the ejector waits until it holds that many items before launching. Set to 10, it lets a belt deliver blocks one at a time, waits, then sends all 10 at once. On "*", it throws everything it gets straight away.

Taking an exact lot

A Brass Tunnel offers a stack of 64 ingots; the ejector, set to 10, takes 10 and throws them onto another belt.

Placed against the side of a Brass Tunnel, the ejector becomes one of its outputs. The tunnel offers it a stack of 64 ingots: set to 10, the ejector only accepts 10 and the rest carries on along the belt. It then throws them towards another line. It is the simplest way to divert an exact amount.

Redstone and observers

A lever blocks the ejector; an observer placed against it sends a pulse at every launch.

A redstone signal blocks the ejector: it keeps its item on the plate while the lever is on, and fires as soon as it is turned off. The other way round, an observer placed against the ejector sends a pulse at every launch, enough to count shipments or trigger the next machine.

A springboard for players

The ejector does not only throw items: a player or an animal standing on the plate flies off with it. Wearing an elytra, the player deploys it automatically in mid-air. A spectacular shortcut between two buildings, as long as you aim the landing well. This part of the Ponder scene, a parrot being launched, is not shown in our loops.
