Steam Engine

The Steam Engine is Create's heavy-duty power source. Attached to a boiler built from Fluid Tanks, heated by Blaze Burners and fed with water, it delivers far more power than any water wheel. It comes down to three ingredients you have to balance: heat, water and boiler size. The weakest of the three sets the level.

A Steam Engine is attached to a Fluid Tank, a shaft goes on its output, then the boiler gets water, heat and the size of four tanks.

The engine attaches to a tank

A copper Fluid Tank alone on the plate, ready to take an engine

A Steam Engine only stays put against a Fluid Tank: place it on one face of the tank, which then becomes a boiler. One tank can carry several engines on its different faces, as long as the boiler is strong enough for all of them.

Connecting the output with a shaft

The Steam Engine attached to the tank, with its output shaft

The engine drives nothing on its own: place a shaft in front of its piston rod, perpendicular to the engine. That shaft becomes the engine's output and carries rotation to the rest of the network like any other shaft. The direction of rotation is set on the engine's value panel.

The minimal boiler: four tanks

A four-block boiler with a Blaze Burner underneath and a pump feeding it water

To reach level 1, you need three things at once: 4 tank blocks (one level per four blocks), 10 mB of water per tick, i.e. 200 mB per second, brought in by a Mechanical Pump, and a heat source under the boiler, usually a fed Blaze Burner. One level is enough for an engine to run at full efficiency: 64 RPM and 16,384 SU, the same as 64 water wheels.

More burners, more power

The boiler grows, gets more Blaze Burners and water, and runs more and more engines at full power.

Every Blaze Burner placed under the boiler adds heat: a fed burner gives 1 level, a burner superheated with a Blaze Cake gives 2. An unlit burner, lava, a campfire or magma only give passive heat, which is very weak: barely an eighth of one engine's power.

Balancing water, size and heat

An enlarged boiler with Steam Engines stacked on its side

The boiler level is the lowest of the three: heat, water and size. A huge boiler with a single burner stays at level 1, and so do ten burners under four tanks. The maximum is level 18 (72 tank blocks, 180 mB of water per tick). Look at the boiler through Engineer's Goggles: the game shows all three gauges and tells you which one is holding it back.

One level per engine

Eight Steam Engines attached to a large boiler, each one linked to a shaft

Each level runs one engine at full power, so a level 8 boiler drives eight engines at 64 RPM. With more engines than levels, the power is shared: efficiency drops, and so do each engine's speed (48, 32, then 16 RPM) and capacity.

Building your first boiler

A layout that works well to start with: a tank 2 × 2 blocks and 1 block high (4 blocks, level 1), a Blaze Burner underneath, a Mechanical Pump drawing from an infinite water source (two source blocks side by side are enough), and a single engine on the side. To grow, widen the tank up to 3 × 3 and build it taller: each 3 × 3 layer adds 9 blocks, so two levels. Then add a burner under each column and engines on the sides, keeping pace with the levels.

Common mistakes

  • The engine will not start: one of the three ingredients is missing. Check the boiler with Goggles: the gauge at zero is the culprit.
  • The burner goes out after a while: it is no longer being fed. Automate it with a Deployer or a Mechanical Arm.
  • The pump cannot keep up: a slow pump limits the water. Speed it up or add another one.
