Hose Pulley
The Hose Pulley lowers a flexible hose into a body of fluid to drain or fill it. It dries up a lava lake, fills a pool block by block or, dipped into an ocean, supplies endless water. Its hose goes up and down with rotation, and its throughput is that of the pump network connected to it.

A hose that goes down
The pulley goes above the body of fluid, straight over the spot where the hose should dive. It carries a flexible hose ending in a nozzle. Place it on an edge with empty space below: the hose must be able to reach the fluid, and nothing solid may stand in its way.
Setting the height with rotation

Rotation lowers the hose by the rotation speed divided by 512 blocks per tick, that is 1.25 blocks per second at 32 RPM. The hose stops on its own on a solid block. Stop the rotation once the nozzle is deep enough.
Raising the hose

Rotation the other way raises the hose at the same speed. It winds back up to the pulley, which no longer works once fully retracted. When rotation stops, the hose settles on a whole block, so its depth is always a round number.
Filling a pool

On its other side, the pulley connects to a pipe network. If the pump pushes towards the pulley, it fills the space around the hose end from the bottom up. Here a pool fills with water block by block.
Draining a lake

If the pump pulls from the pulley, it drains the body of fluid from the top down and sends the liquid into the network. Throughput depends only on the network: a faster pump drains faster. The pulley reaches blocks up to 128 blocks from the hose end.
The final level
A retracted pulley does nothing: lower the hose first. When draining, it removes the layers from the top down, and the surface ends up just below the hose end. To drain deeper, lower the hose further.
Filling up to where?

When filling, the pulley works from the bottom up, and the pool never rises above the layer right above the hose end. The nozzle height therefore sets the final level, either way.
A bottomless source
Dipped into a body of at least 10,000 blocks of water or lava, an ocean or a Nether lava sea, the pulley becomes an infinite source: it supplies fluid without ever lowering the level, and can also pour into it without raising it. Other fluids are never infinite.
What the animations show
The pulley's hose and nozzle are redrawn by us from the game's code, and water is opaque in our renders. The hose winding inside the pulley is not animated.
Tips
To dry up a lava lake, lower the hose to the bottom before starting the pump, then let the pulley work layer by layer. For an unlimited water supply, nothing beats a pulley in the ocean connected to a big Fluid Tank: it feeds a boiler or a Water Wheel without ever emptying the sea. And mind the stress: the pulley uses 4 SU per RPM on top of the pump, so a fast drain needs a strong rotation source.
